The Equalizer 3

American action thriller The Equalizer 3 was directed by Antoine Fuqua in 2023. It is a prequel to The Equalizer 2 and the third and final film in the Equalizer trilogy, loosely based on the same-named television series. Denzel Washington reprises his role as Robert McCall, a retired U.S. Marine and DIA officer. Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar, and Remo Girone also appear in supporting roles. In the film, McCall finds that his new companions in a humble community in South Italy are scared by individuals from the Camorra, and he embarks to liberate them from their control.

Following the release of the second Equalizer film on August 2, 2018, discussions for a third installment began. In January 2022, the project was officially announced. Shooting started on October 10, 2022, on the Amalfi Coast in Italy and went on in the area until November 20, after which it moved to Naples toward the beginning of December, prior to wrapping creation by January 2023 in Rome. The project's director of photography is Robert Richardson, who previously collaborated with Fuqua on Emancipation (2022).

Sony Pictures Releasing released The Equalizer 3 in the United States on September 1, 2023. The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes stated that the film "mostly makes up for its formulaic story with generous helpings of cathartic action" and earned $75 million worldwide.

Summary

Criminal enforcer Lorenzo Vitale discovers that Robert McCall, a retired U.S. Marine and DIA agent who is waiting in the basement and held at gunpoint by two of Vitale's bodyguards, has brutally murdered many of his henchmen at a remote winery in Sicily. McCall kills him and the other gangsters in order to get a key to the winery's vault and get back money stolen in a cyber heist—the reason McCall is there—but Vitale's adolescent son shoots McCall in the back as he leaves the winery. McCall takes the ferry back to the mainland instead of considering suicide due to his injury. He stops his car on the Amalfi Coast and falls unconscious from shock. Gio Bonucci, a local carabinieri, finds him and saves him.

Bonucci takes him to Altamonte, a small Italian town on the coast, where he is treated by Enzo Arisio, a local doctor. McCall recovers slowly, requiring a cane and having difficulty climbing stairs. He falls in love with the town and its inhabitants after getting to know the locals, including a waitress by the name of Aminah. In order to inform CIA agent Emma Collins of the winery's involvement in the illegal drug trade while conducting regular business in Sicily, McCall calls Emma Collins anonymously. McCall's suspicions are confirmed when Collins and other CIA agents arrive at the winery and discover bags of Captagon tablets and millions of dollars hidden in a storeroom. She goes after McCall, but he refuses to reveal his identity.

In the meantime, members of the Camorra attempt to force villagers out of their homes and take control of Altamonte for commercial purposes by harassing and killing them. McCall overhears a high-ranking Camorra member, Marco Quaranta, demanding payments from a local seafood store owner named Angelo. For instance, Angelo's fish store is set on fire by the Camorra while the entire town watches. After reviewing the video of the firebombing, Bonucci contacts the central police of Italy to request an investigation into the van involved. He and his significant other and girl are gone after by the Camorra and beaten for meddling in their activities. 

Afterward, Marco and different criminals request that Bonucci set up a boat for them; McCall overhears them and demands that they relocate their operations elsewhere. He kills Marco and his cronies when he refuses. Vincent, Marco's brother, threatens and tortures the Naples police chief to find out who killed Marco. 

Collins escapes after McCall warns her that Vincent has a bomb in his car. If McCall does not reveal himself, Vincent later threatens to shoot Bonucci in front of the entire community. McCall does, yet before Vincent can kill him, the residents start to record the trial, making Vincent and the remainder of the Camorra retreat with plans to fight back the next day.

Soon thereafter, McCall kills Vincent alongside his guardians and, through Collins, returns the cash he had taken from the winery to an older couple's benefits reserve. Collins receives a promotion for her efforts to end the Altamonte drug trade back in Langley, Virginia. She is then uncovered to be the girl of McCall's late overseer, Susan Plummer, and her significant other, Brian. McCall joins the locals to celebrate their football team's victory after the Quaranta brothers' deaths.
